Centres of Teaching and Learning: Their critical role in keeping higher education one step ahead

From MOOCs to online learning and most recently artificial intelligence, the higher education teaching and learning landscape has been constantly evolving in response to

external factors. Centers of Teaching and Learning (CTLs) have had a vital role in steering institutes towards innovative pedagogies. Thus, it is no surprise that accreditation agencies have highlighted the necessary role of centres of teaching and learning (CTLs) in ensuring higher education institutes remain nimble and responsive. Below, several examples of CTLs in the region proactively adapting to change are highlighted.

During Covid, Centers of Teaching and Learning led the shift to online and blended learning. They were at the forefront organizing webinars, workshops and offering support to faculty expected to fundamentally shift everything they knew about teaching overnight. Dhofar University in Oman, like many universities, is one example of an institute which offered a series of webinars and workshops on topics such as online teaching practices to coping strategies during stressful times. Qatar University is an example of an institute which created a comprehensive collection of resources offering videos and guidebooks on online learning, assessments and best practices.

More recently as ChatGPT emerged, the education sector was well aware that swift action would be required. CTLs were quick to respond. The American University of Kuwait's CTL implemented faculty workshops on the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence. The University of Doha for Science and Technology's department of applied and experiential learning held a webinar with experts attended by faculty and students on the implications of AI on higher education. Via Education were proud to participate in both endeavors.

While the primary role of CTLs was to support faculty in improving their teaching skills and creating effective and engaging learning experiences for students. CTLs have played a crucial role in ensuring critical disruptors in education are effectively integrated in the educational ecosystem.
